If you’re searching for gluten free Elizabeth City dining options, you might be surprised at what you’ll find in this charming waterfront town. Elizabeth City, NC, isn’t a major tourist destination, but it has a warm, welcoming community and some hidden gems worth exploring. From restaurants and coffee shops to outdoor spaces and local events, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the city while still eating safely gluten-free.

I spent six weeks here during my dietetic internship in 2021 and have come back a few times since then to visit a friend.

Gluten Free Eats Elizabeth City

Hoppin’ Johnz

Hoppin’ Johnz was the only restaurant I made it to multiple times during my time in Elizabeth City. It’s one of the most popular restaurants downtown, known for its quirky vibe, seasonal cocktails, and menu full of Southern-inspired dishes. While the menu itself doesn’t include gluten-free labels, it’s one of the best gluten free Elizabeth City dining spots I found thanks to a knowledgeable staff and plenty of safe modifications.

The first visit happened during First Friday, when downtown Elizabeth City comes alive with music, food, and crowds. Because the restaurant was so busy, I kept it simple and ordered a burger without the bun, paired with a fresh side salad. Sometimes, especially in a hectic environment, playing it safe is the best choice. To drink, I tried a blueberry-lavender vodka cocktail that reminded me of a popsicle.

On another visit, I stopped by on a quieter weekday evening, which gave me more space to relax and enjoy the menu. This time I went with the bronze baked chicken served with asparagus and mashed potatoes, which was both naturally gluten-free and full of flavor. To sip, I tried the Hoppin’ Punch, while my friend ordered a basil martini. Honestly, that martini ended up being my favorite sip of the night.

Montero’s

For a more upscale dining experience in Elizabeth City, Montero’s is a fantastic choice. It’s a local favorite for date nights, celebrations, or just treating yourself to a nice meal (like I did). The restaurant doesn’t have gluten-free markings on the menu, but the staff was open to questions and able to point me toward safe options, which is always a relief when dining out with Celiac Disease.

I ordered their house salad along with the famous crab dip. The dip itself was gluten-free and I ordered with fresh vegetables instead of bread for dipping. The dip was creamy, flavorful, and easily the highlight of my meal. I don’t know why I hadn’t had crab dip before this, but highly recommend. To go with it, I had a margarita that was light, refreshing, and a perfect pairing for the rich seafood flavors.

If you’re looking for a restaurant that balances local charm with a slightly more polished dining experience, Montero’s fits the bill. It’s a great spot to include in your gluten free Elizabeth City itinerary, especially if you want something beyond casual pub food.

Bars, Breweries, and Beverages in Elizabeth City

Muddy Waters Coffeehouse

Muddy Waters Coffeehouse is one of those coffee shops that feels instantly welcoming. The vibe is cozy but also eclectic, with mismatched furniture, local art, and the kind of energy that makes you want to linger with a book or catch up with a friend. While there aren’t specific gluten-free food items listed on the menu, the drinks are the main attraction here, and I had no problem finding something safe to enjoy.

I ordered an iced matcha latte with oat milk, which was refreshing on a warm afternoon. My friend went for a seasonal iced latte, and we both agreed it hit the spot. There’s something about local coffee shops like this that really capture the spirit of a town, and Muddy Waters does that perfectly. Even though I couldn’t grab a pastry to go with my drink, the atmosphere alone made it worth a visit.

2 Souls Wine Bar

2 Souls Wine Bar is a cozy and welcoming spot run by two friends, and it quickly stood out as one of the more unique places I visited in Elizabeth City. It has the kind of atmosphere where you can dress up for date night or come casually with friends and still feel right at home. The space is open and comfortable, with a mix of bar seating, tables, and couches that make it easy to settle in.

I visited during a girls’ night out, which made it the perfect backdrop for sipping and chatting. I ordered a sweeter white wine. Although I’m no wine expert, I appreciated how approachable the staff were and how wide their selection seemed. Live music added to the evening, making it feel lively yet still intimate compared to the bustle of Pailin’s Alley.

If you’re exploring gluten free Elizabeth City options and want a relaxed evening spot, 2 Souls Wine Bar is a great choice. The extensive wine list and atmosphere make it an ideal stop before or after dinner, or as the main event if you just want a slower-paced night out.

Coasters Downtown Draught House

Coasters Downtown Draught House is the kind of place that embraces its dive-bar charm, and I mean that in the best way possible. It’s located right in Pailin’s Alley, making it easy to pop in and out between other stops. The entry process is a little quirky. They do require an annual membership, but thankfully it is only $1 at the door. After checking your ID, they’ll give you a wristband that marks you as part of the crowd.

Inside, the vibe is casual and unpretentious. High-top tables and dart boards line the space, but most people don’t linger too long. The usual routine seemed to be grabbing a shot or drink of choice, then heading back outside to enjoy the alley. On one of my visits, I watched groups bounce back and forth between Coasters and Ghost Harbor Brewing, each place adding its own flavor to the night.

Ghost Harbor Brewing Company

If you enjoy the brewery scene, Ghost Harbor Brewing is a must-visit in Elizabeth City. It’s a small but lively brewery tucked right in the heart of downtown. The atmosphere is casual and friendly, with a mix of locals and visitors stopping in for a pint.

Beer is off-limits for anyone gluten-free, but Ghost Harbor carries hard seltzer options, which are gluten-free and safe to enjoy. When I visited, they had a rotating seltzer on tap that was light, crisp, and refreshing. It was the perfect summer drink to sip on while catching up with friends and enjoying the live entertainment.

More to Love in Elizabeth City: Things to Do and See

Museum of the Albemarle

The Museum of the Albemarle, which also serves as the area’s visitor center, is a great starting point if you’re new to Elizabeth City. Located right along the waterfront, the museum highlights the history and culture of northeastern North Carolina, from early Native American life to the maritime heritage that shaped the region. It’s not a huge museum, but it’s thoughtfully put together and easy to enjoy at your own pace.

When I visited, I spent a while in the permanent exhibits, which feature artifacts, photographs, and interactive displays. I especially liked learning more about the Albemarle Sound and the role the waterways played in shaping the local economy and culture. It gave me a better appreciation for the town beyond the restaurants and downtown activities. As someone who grew up in Dayton, Ohio, I also appreciated learning more about the Wright Brothers and their first flight.

The museum is free to enter, which makes it an easy addition to your itinerary if you’re looking for something educational and budget-friendly.

Waterfront Park

After exploring the museum, head just a short walk away to Elizabeth City’s Waterfront Park. This quiet retreat sits right along the Pasquotank River and quickly became one of my favorite places to unwind. The view of the water is beautiful, especially at sunset, when the sky glows and the river reflects soft colors. There’s a walking path, plenty of benches, and open space that makes it a great spot for a picnic or just a breather between activities.

Throughout my internship I enjoyed taking my lunch break at the park. Sitting by the water watching boats drift by and families walking along the pier. It’s the kind of place where time slows down a little.

If you’re looking for more than food on your gluten free Elizabeth City trip, Waterfront Park is the perfect complement. It gives you a chance to enjoy the natural beauty of the area while also offering a spot to relax and recharge before heading back downtown.

Pailin’s Alley

Once you’re ready for something livelier, make your way downtown to Pailin’s Alley. By day, it’s colorful and quirky with murals, string lights, and outdoor seating that makes it feel like a hidden corner of the city. But at night the alley comes alive. Locals and visitors gather here to listen to live music, grab drinks from nearby bars, and enjoy the open-air atmosphere.

When I visited during First Friday, the space was packed in the best way possible. Music spilled through the alley, people were laughing and dancing, and there was an energy that made it easy to strike up conversations with strangers. It felt less like an event you attend and more like a community block party you’re welcomed into.

For anyone exploring gluten free Elizabeth City, Pailin’s Alley is worth checking out for the experience. The atmosphere makes you feel like you’re part of something uniquely local.

First Friday ArtWalk

If your trip lines up with the first Friday of the month, don’t miss the ArtWalk. Downtown Elizabeth City fills with people browsing art, enjoying live performances, and stopping into shops and restaurants that stay open late. It’s part art show, part street festival, and part community celebration.

For travelers looking for a genuine taste of Elizabeth City, First Friday is a fun ways to experience it. And while it can get crowded, there are still safe gluten free Elizabeth City dining options within walking distance, making it easy to enjoy the event without worrying about food.

Final Thoughts: Gluten Free Elizabeth City

Elizabeth City may be small, but it has a lively mix of restaurants, local breweries, and activities that make it worth a visit. For anyone traveling with Celiac Disease or eating gluten-free, there are safe and delicious spots to enjoy here. Whether it’s a burger at Hoppin’ Johnz, a seltzer at Ghost Harbor Brewing, or some crab dip at Montero’s the gluten free Elizabeth City food scene is surprisingly diverse. Pair that with the friendly community and coastal charm, and you’ll leave with both a full stomach and great memories.
