Kerbey Lane Cafe

Fun fact: the first restaurant I ever visited in Austin was Kerbey Lane Cafe. That day was packed with many Austin-y things — visiting Mount Bonnell, exploring the original Hope Outdoor Gallery location, and of course, eating at Kerbey Lane. It was a good day with great people, and I loved getting my first real taste of Austin.

Since then, I’ve gone back to Kerbey Lane, this time at a different location, and still had a great experience. The two locations felt a little different but had a similar vibe — welcoming, fun, and very Austin. Most recently, I visited their William Cannon location in Southwest Austin. It had a modern, open feel, and I loved seeing the displays of Austin newspaper clippings and memorabilia throughout the restaurant. They really seem proud to be a part of the Austin community, and it shows.

At the time of my first visit, I wasn’t blogging or keeping much record of what I ate, but if I had to guess, I probably got pancakes. (If I were a betting gal, that’s where I’d put my money.) This last time, though, I switched it up and ordered the gluten-free French toast.

Some of the breakfast menu options

I honestly don’t remember having French toast much as a kid, so I usually skip over it at restaurants. But part of the reason I chose it this time was because I didn’t want the weekly special pancake. (Later I realized the weekly special wasn’t my only option — oops.)

The French toast was pretty good! I’m not sure what gluten-free bread they use — or if they make their own — but it was impressive. It had a good taste and texture, and best of all, it didn’t fall apart on contact (if you’ve had much gluten-free bread, you know how rare that can be!). I do wish it had been a little sweeter, but maybe French toast isn’t supposed to be super sweet. Even though I enjoyed it, I’ll probably stick to pancakes next time — personal preference more than anything. And most importantly, I had no gluten issues after eating there, which is always a win!

Of all the places I’ve visited in Austin so far, I’d definitely recommend making Kerbey Lane a priority if you’re short on time. With eight locations around the city, it’s easy to find one no matter what part of Austin you’re exploring. Maybe my friends hyped it up a bit, but they made it feel like an Austin institution — like nothing could be more “Austin” than Kerbey Lane. Even with the hype, I think it lives up to its reputation. It’s a fun, family-friendly local spot with good food, and I’ll definitely be back for pancakes.

Oh, and if you don’t have time for a sit-down meal, they sell their gluten-free pancake mix so you can still bring a little bit of the Kerbey Lane experience home with you!

And just to be clear — their gluten-free options aren’t limited to breakfast. They also offer gluten-free buns for sandwiches and some naturally gluten-free meals, so even if breakfast isn’t your thing, you’ll still have plenty of options.
