At the beginning of my time in Austin, I had a fun night out with my Godmother (who I was living with at the time). She had a kid-free evening and wanted to try one of the many restaurants that offers gluten-free options in the area. Based on the time and proximity, we landed on a popular local spot: Odd Duck

🦆 About Odd Duck

Odd Duck is an Austin favorite, originally started as a food truck and now located in a stylish brick-and-mortar space on South Lamar Boulevard. They serve seasonal, farm-to-table fare and pride themselves on sustainability, creativity, and flavor.

🍹 First Impressions & Drinks While You Wait

We arrived without a reservation and were told it would be about a 45-minute wait. Luckily, Odd Duck has a clever solution for this—a server was making the rounds taking drink orders from those waiting for a table.

I ordered the Draft Paloma. It had margarita vibes, which I love, and it didn’t include any alcohols that I don’t love. I was impressed—it was refreshing, creative, and balanced. I’d definitely order it again.

Their cocktail and food menus rotate seasonally, so each visit brings something new.

Pro Tip: Make a reservation ahead of time if you can. It’s a popular spot!

🍽️ Dinner at the Bar & an Open Kitchen View

We didn’t end up waiting the full 45 minutes and were seated at the bar. Interestingly, sitting there turned out to be a bonus—we had a great view of their open kitchen, which made the dining experience even more enjoyable. Furthermore, I always appreciate the transparency, especially as someone with dietary restrictions.

âś… Gluten-Free & Knowledgeable about Celiac Disease

When it came to ordering, I asked for a gluten-free menu, and the server immediately followed up with, “Do you have Celiac?” Once I said yes, they adjusted the menu to ensure my meal would be Celiac-safe. This level of care and communication is rare and meant a lot to me.

Most restaurants list gluten-free options with a cross-contact disclaimer. Odd Duck goes the extra mile to keep diners with Celiac safe, and that alone makes them worth supporting.

🥕 What We Ordered

To make the most of the experience, my Godmother and I decided to share a few dishes:

Grilled Carrots

Roasted Sweet Potatoes

Pork Entrée

Odd Duck Grilled Carrots
Odd Duck Sweet Potato
Odd Duck Pork

To my surprise, cooked carrots and sweet potatoes are usually not my favorites—but the way Odd Duck prepared them was next-level. The flavors were rich, balanced, and creative.

The pork? Tender, juicy, and melt-in-your-mouth good. I didn’t want the meal to end.

🍰 Gluten-Free Desserts Available

Even though we were too full to order dessert, I was happy to see gluten-free dessert options on the menu. Next time, I’ll be sure to save room!

đź’¬ Final Thoughts

Overall, if you’re gluten-free—or especially if you have Celiac disease—Odd Duck is a must-visit while you’re in Austin. Yes, it’s a bit of a splurge, but the ingredient quality and attention to food safety make it more than worth it.

Not many places offer a Celiac-specific menu. That alone makes Odd Duck stand out.
