Wheat’s End Cafe Chicago, Illinois

April 22, 2026

During my recent trip to Chicago for my brother’s wedding, we carved out some family time between wedding events. This included a visit to the Children’s Museum with my nieces, which was such a fun stop for all of us. Afterward, we headed to Wheat’s End Cafe, a place I’d had on my “want to try” list for a while. I don’t believe I’d been before, and once we arrived, I knew right away this was a new-to-me spot.

Environment

Wheat’s End Cafe is a small, cozy space tucked into the city. Though they do have a storefront, they do not offer dine in. So expect to grab your items and find a nice place to enjoy them elsewhere. With that said, the space still has charm, especially the beautiful mural on the wall, which adds personality and warmth despite the limited square footage.

Inside, there’s a fridge stocked with frozen items and a small retail section, making it easy to grab baked goods to take home and enjoy later. It felt like one of those places where you pop in, stock up, and leave very happy.

Food

Between all of us, we ordered quite a few items. I chose a cranberry orange scone, a cinnamon roll, and a half dozen frozen cinnamon raisin bagels to take home. We also grabbed chocolate chip cookies for my nieces, who can eat gluten.

The flavors across the board were really enjoyable. Everything I tried tasted well-balanced and thoughtfully made. The baked goods were a bit dense, which can sometimes be the case with gluten-free baked goods, but the flavors more than made up for it. The cranberry orange scone had a nice brightness to it, and the cinnamon roll was comforting and classic.

The real win for me, though, was the cinnamon raisin bagels. I packed them in my suitcase and flew home with them, and they toasted up beautifully. Enjoyed with some cream cheese, they made for such a satisfying gluten-free bagel moment, something that’s still not always easy to find. Off topic, but why aren’t brands making gluten-free bagels?

Because we were planning to head back to our rental and make dinner after our stop, I didn’t get the chance to try any of Wheat’s End’s more hearty hot meals. If our schedule had allowed, I absolutely would have loved to explore that part of the menu. I guess that just means I need to return to Chicago and Wheat’s End Cafe.

Final Thoughts on Wheat’s End Cafe

What I appreciate most about Wheat’s End Cafe is simply that it exists. Having a fully gluten-free space means being able to order without the stress or second-guessing that often comes with eating out when you have Celiac Disease. There’s something incredibly freeing about knowing the food is truly gluten-free and safe. Though, it does also give me so much decision fatigue having to decide between all the amazing offers.

While it may not be a place you linger for hours, it’s an excellent stop for baked goods, take-home items, or grabbing something comforting while exploring Chicago. Wheat’s End is the kind of spot that reminds me why dedicated gluten-free businesses are so important. They allow people to enjoy food again, without fear.

If you’re gluten-free and find yourself in Chicago, Wheat’s End Cafe is absolutely worth a visit.
