Finding a dedicated gluten-free bakery is always exciting when you’re living with Celiac Disease. If you live with Celiac, you know just how rare truly safe options can be. Recently I made a trip to Midland, Michigan to visit Off the Wheaten Path, a dedicated gluten-free bakery and retail store offering both house-made baked goods and a curated selection of gluten-free products.
Environment
My visit to Off the Wheaten Path actually started with a bit of an adventure. While driving there, I missed the turn into the parking lot, and my GPS promptly rerouted me through a series of country roads. Along the way, I passed a horse, a few cows, and plenty of open fields. At one point I laughed to myself and thought, “This place really is off the beaten path.” Of course, I quickly realized it only felt that way because I had made a wrong turn.
Once I finally arrived, I was greeted by a bright and welcoming space. The bakery has a cheerful atmosphere with beautiful floral artwork painted on the walls that gives the store a fun, inviting feel. Beyond the bakery case, there was also a retail section stocked with gluten-free products. Some brands were familiar favorites, while others were completely new to me.

One of the highlights of my visit was getting the chance to speak with the owner. She was incredibly kind and passionate about what she does. During our conversation, she shared that Off the Wheaten Path is currently the only dedicated gluten-free establishment within 100 miles. She spoke about her love of baking gluten-free products and how much she enjoys connecting with members of the gluten-free community. It’s always inspiring to meet business owners who truly understand the importance of safe dining for those with Celiac disease and other gluten-related disorders.
Food
If my bank account had allowed it, I probably would have walked out with one of everything. Instead, I exercised some restraint and selected a few treats that immediately caught my eye.
First up was a cinnamon roll. Anyone who follows my gluten-free travels knows that I have a hard time passing up a gluten-free cinnamon roll, and this one did not disappoint. It was soft, flavorful, and exactly the kind of bakery treat I hope to find when visiting dedicated gluten-free establishments.
I also picked up a beautifully decorated frosted sugar cookie shaped like a flower. The design felt perfectly suited for spring or summer, and it was almost too pretty to eat. Almost.
I rounded out my selections with a red velvet cake topped with a caramel drizzle. While red velvet cake isn’t unusual, the caramel was an unexpected addition that worked surprisingly well. It added an extra layer of sweetness that balanced nicely with the cake and made each bite especially enjoyable.

What impressed me most was the texture of all three items. Texture can be one of the biggest challenges in gluten-free baking, but every pastry I tried was excellent. I generally avoid comparing gluten-free products to their gluten-containing counterparts, especially since it’s been many years since I’ve eaten them. However, these baked goods were so well executed that I imagine most people wouldn’t notice a difference.
Before leaving, I also picked up one of the baking mixes from the retail section. I haven’t had the opportunity to try it yet, but I’m looking forward to seeing if it lives up to the quality of the baked goods I sampled during my visit.
Final Thoughts on Off the Wheaten Path
My visit to Off the Wheaten Path was a wonderful experience from start to finish. Between the welcoming atmosphere, delicious baked goods, thoughtfully curated retail section, and the opportunity to connect with the owner, it’s easy to see why this bakery has become such an important resource for the local gluten-free community.
For those living in Midland or anyone traveling through central Michigan, Off the Wheaten Path is well worth a visit. Dedicated gluten-free bakeries can be difficult to find, and it’s clear that a great deal of care and passion goes into everything they create here.
I’m already looking forward to my next visit, and next time, hopefully I won’t miss the turn into the parking lot.
