Maudie’s Tex Mex Austin, Tx

When people think of Austin food, Tex-Mex is often one of the first cuisines that comes to mind. Fortunately, there are several restaurants throughout the city that offer gluten-free options, including Maudie’s. With multiple locations across Austin and the surrounding area, Maudie’s has become a longtime local favorite for Tex-Mex classics.

During my visit, I was impressed not only by the food but also by the staff’s understanding of gluten-free dining and cross-contact concerns. If you’re looking for gluten-free Tex-Mex in Austin, here’s what my experience was like.

Environment at Maudie’s

If you’re searching for gluten-free Tex-Mex in Austin, Maudie’s is a local favorite worth considering. With multiple locations throughout Austin and the surrounding area, it’s a convenient option whether you’re a local or a visitor.

For this visit, I dined at the South Austin location on Slaughter Lane. The restaurant has a casual, family-friendly atmosphere that feels welcoming and relaxed. While the dining room was somewhat smaller than I expected, the space was clean, comfortable, and well maintained. There is also a full bar area for guests looking to enjoy a margarita or other beverage with their meal.

One thing that stood out during my visit was the service. We were seated quickly, and our server was attentive throughout the meal. As someone with a dietary restriction, knowledgeable staff makes a significant difference in the dining experience. I was greatly appreciative of the service I received here.

Food at Maudie’s

The highlight of my visit was the staff’s awareness of gluten-free dining needs.

When our table received a basket of tortilla chips, I asked whether they were safe for someone with Celiac Disease. Rather than providing a vague answer, our server immediately explained that the regular chips were fried alongside gluten-containing menu items and would not be considered gluten-free.

What impressed me even more was that Maudie’s had a solution ready. The server offered me a separate bag of pre-packaged tortilla chips along with my own salsa. Receiving an unopened bag of chips helped minimize the risk of cross-contact and demonstrated that the restaurant had procedures in place for guests requiring a gluten-free meal.

This interaction gave me confidence that the staff understood the importance of preventing cross-contact rather than simply identifying menu items that do not contain gluten ingredients. That distinction is especially important for those with Celiac Disease.

For my entree, I ordered the Power Bowl. Similar to a burrito bowl you might find at Chipotle, it included rice, beans, protein, and vegetables. Best of all, this menu item was already gluten-free and did not require any modifications.

Whenever possible, I prefer to order menu items that are naturally gluten-free rather than heavily modified. While there are no guarantees when dining out, choosing dishes that require fewer changes can sometimes reduce the risk of mistakes and cross-contact in the kitchen.

The Power Bowl was flavorful, filling, and exactly what I was craving that day. Most importantly, I felt well after my meal and did not experience any issues afterward.

Before leaving, I also ordered dessert to go. Maudie’s offered a flourless chocolate cake served with raspberry sauce, and I couldn’t resist trying the restaurant’s gluten-free dessert option.

The cake itself was rich, fudgy, and delicious, but the raspberry sauce was the real star of the show. The sweet-tart flavor paired perfectly with the chocolate. I found myself using every last bit of sauce that came with it. If flourless chocolate cake is on the menu during your visit, I highly recommend saving room for dessert.

Final Thoughts on Maudie’s Tex Mex

Overall, I had a positive experience dining gluten-free at Maudie’s. The restaurant’s willingness to provide a safer alternative to their standard chips, combined with a knowledgeable server who understood cross-contact concerns, made me feel comfortable eating there.

Finding gluten-free Tex-Mex in Austin can sometimes feel challenging due to shared fryers, flour tortillas, and busy kitchen environments. However, my experience at Maudie’s suggested that the staff takes gluten-free requests seriously and works to accommodate guests with dietary restrictions.

Between the knowledgeable service, naturally gluten-free menu options, and a delicious gluten-free dessert, Maudie’s earned a spot on my list of Austin restaurants worth revisiting. As always, restaurant procedures can change over time, so be sure to ask questions about ingredients and preparation methods during your visit to determine whether the restaurant is a good fit for your individual needs.
