Finding gluten-free Asian food can often feel like a challenge. Since traditional soy sauce contains wheat, many Japanese restaurants have limited options for those with Celiac Disease. Thankfully, Wasabi in downtown Asheville is one restaurant that has consistently provided me with a safe and enjoyable dining experience.
Although their website doesn’t heavily advertise gluten-free options, Wasabi can prepare several menu items with gluten-free soy sauce. During my time living in Asheville, this became one of my favorite spots whenever I was craving Japanese food.
Environment
Located in the heart of downtown Asheville, Wasabi is an easy stop after a day of exploring the city. Their front patio overlooks Broadway, making it a fun place to enjoy dinner while people-watching and taking in the energy of downtown.
The dining room is on the smaller side, so it can get busy during peak meal times. Despite that, I never had a negative experience with the service. The staff was always friendly, and my meals consistently arrived in a timely manner.
If you’re planning an evening in downtown Asheville, Wasabi is a great option. Whether you’re meeting friends for dinner or looking for a casual meal after shopping or sightseeing consider checking out Wasabi.
Food at Wasabi
One of the biggest challenges of eating gluten-free at Asian restaurants is avoiding traditional soy sauce, which contains wheat. Fortunately, Wasabi keeps gluten-free soy sauce available, allowing them to prepare select dishes safely for gluten-free diners.
While the restaurant is also known for its sushi, I found myself ordering the same meal nearly every visit, the gluten-free shrimp fried rice. I’m definitely a creature of habit, and this dish never disappointed.
The fried rice was flavorful, filling, and generously portioned. One thing I especially appreciated was that the leftovers reheated incredibly well. Unlike sushi, which is generally best enjoyed fresh, this meal made for an excellent lunch the following day, giving it even more value.

Although I never ordered an alcoholic beverage during my visits, my friends and I were usually exploring downtown before dinner, Wasabi offers sake and a variety of other drinks if you’re looking to enjoy one with your meal.
As always when dining out with Celiac Disease, I recommend letting your server know about your gluten-free needs so the kitchen can take the appropriate precautions when preparing your food.
Final Thoughts on Wasabi Asheville
Overall, Wasabi became one of my favorite restaurants for gluten-free Japanese food in Asheville. Between the availability of gluten-free soy sauce, the consistently delicious fried rice, generous portions, and reliable service, Wasabi was a restaurant I returned to regularly while living in the area.
If you’re looking for gluten-free Japanese food in downtown Asheville, Wasabi is definitely worth considering. Whether you’re a local or visiting the city, it’s a great option when you’re craving flavorful Japanese cuisine without having to completely give up your favorite dishes.
