If you’re looking for flavorful Tex-Mex style food in Asheville with solid gluten-free options, Mountain Madre is absolutely worth a visit. I’ve consistently had great experiences with both the food and the way they handle gluten-free dining.
Mountain Madre currently has two locations in Asheville. One downtown and one in North Asheville, both offering dine-in service as well as carryout.
Environment
Mountain Madre has two distinct vibes depending on which location you choose.
The downtown Asheville location is perfect if you’re already out exploring shops, breweries, or enjoying the energy of downtown. The space is a bit smaller and more intimate, which makes it feel cozy. This does mean it can also mean it fills up quickly during busy times.
The newer North Asheville location is much more open and spacious. It’s bright, beautiful, and has more seating, making it a great option for larger groups, or if you prefer a little more breathing room. The overall atmosphere feels fresh and modern while still being welcoming and relaxed.
Both locations offer dine-in and carryout, which makes it convenient whether you’re planning a night out or just want to bring something home.
If you enjoy margaritas or tequila, Mountain Madre also has an impressive selection. They offer a variety of margaritas and a wide range of tequilas, making it a fun spot for anyone looking to pair their meal with a cocktail.
Food
Let’s start with my favorite part: the dip sampler.
If you go to Mountain Madre and don’t order the dip sampler, I truly think you’re missing out. The queso is hands down the best queso I’ve found in Asheville and I have eaten a lot of queso in my day. It’s creamy, flavorful, and exactly what you want when you’re sitting down at a Mexican restaurant.
The guacamole is another standout and can be included in the sampler. It’s fresh, well-seasoned, and pairs perfectly with the queso. Sharing the dip sampler with the table is one of my favorite ways to start the meal.
For my entree, I have never strayed from the burrito bowl with tinga chicken. It’s flavorful, filling, and satisfying every single time. If you need a comparison, think of a Chipotle-style burrito bowl, but elevated in quality and flavor. The ingredients taste fresh, the seasoning is on point, and the portion is generous without feeling heavy.
From a gluten-free standpoint, I’ve had good experiences ordering here. They have gluten-free options listed directly on the menu, making it easier to navigate choices and feel more confident ordering. As always, everyone’s comfort level is different when dining out, but I’ve personally felt comfortable and have had consistently positive experiences.
Final Thoughts on Mountain Madre
Mountain Madre is one of my go-to restaurants in Asheville. Between the standout queso, the consistently delicious burrito bowl, and the welcoming atmosphere, it’s a place I genuinely enjoy returning to.
Whether you’re downtown for the evening or closer to North Asheville, you can expect great food, solid gluten-free options, and a fun environment, especially if you’re a margarita fan.
I would absolutely recommend Mountain Madre to anyone visiting or living in Asheville, including those who need to be gluten-free. If you go, let me know what you order (I hope it includes the dips!)
