Gluten Free at Barrio Taco

Finding a taco restaurant that takes gluten-free dining seriously is always exciting, and Barrio Taco was a pleasant surprise. I visited the East Lansing location while exploring the area. While planning my trip, I saw they offered several gluten-free options and knew I had to give it a try. After my visit, I learned that Barrio is a growing taco and tequila franchise with restaurants in multiple states.

Environment

As soon as I walked into Barrio Taco, I was reminded of my college days visiting Condado with friends. The colorful murals, upbeat atmosphere, and creative decor gave the restaurant a fun, energetic vibe. The East Lansing location is just steps away from Michigan State University. It feels like the perfect place for students, families, or anyone meeting friends for a casual meal.

The restaurant struck a nice balance between lively and comfortable. Barrio has a welcoming atmosphere. It’s a great spot for tacos after work or dinner with friends.

Before my meal, I ordered their June drink special without the alcohol. It featured pineapple and passionfruit flavors that tasted bright and refreshing for summer. It leaned on the sweeter side, but I really enjoyed it and even left thinking about how I could recreate it at home.

Food

One of the first things that caught my attention was learning that Barrio fries their tortilla chips in a dedicated fryer, making them gluten-free. That’s always exciting to hear because it means I could actually enjoy chips and salsa without worrying about cross-contact.

For ordering, Barrio uses a build-your-own taco paper menu where you customize each taco by choosing your protein, toppings, and sauces. I love this style of menu because it allows you to create exactly what you’re craving, although narrowing down all the delicious combinations can be the hardest part.

When I told my server I needed to eat gluten-free, she recommended writing “gluten allergy” directly on my order sheet so the kitchen would be aware. I appreciated that extra step and the attention to making sure my dietary needs were communicated clearly.

For my meal, I ordered:

  • A barbacoa beef taco with pineapple salsa
  • A chicken taco with corn salsa and aioli
  • A side of queso to enjoy with my chips

The service was impressively fast. I had barely started enjoying my chips and salsa before my tacos arrived at the table.

Both tacos were generously filled and packed with flavor. The barbacoa beef ended up being my favorite. The tender beef paired perfectly with the sweet pineapple salsa. I think adding another topping or two would have made it even better. The chicken taco was also delicious, with the sweetness from the corn salsa pairing nicely with the creamy aioli.

Overall Thoughts on Gluten Free Barrio Taco

Overall, I had a great experience dining gluten-free at Barrio Taco. Between the dedicated fryer for tortilla chips, the customizable tacos, and a staff member who knew how to communicate my gluten-free needs to the kitchen, I felt comfortable eating there.

The fun atmosphere, quick service, and flavorful food made for an enjoyable meal, and I would absolutely visit again. If you’re looking for gluten-free tacos in East Lansing or happen to have a Barrio Taco location near you, I think it’s worth adding to your list.

As always, remember that restaurant procedures can change over time. Let your server know about your gluten-free needs, ask questions about preparation practices, and order based on your own comfort level.
