Cava is a fast-casual Mediterranean restaurant with locations across the United States. It has grown significantly in popularity over the past few years. I first visited a Cava location in Chapel Hill, NC after hearing great reviews from classmates. Many of them were excited to share about the wide variety of naturally gluten-free options.
As someone with Celiac Disease, finding quick, convenient, and safe options can be challenging. This made trying a new fast food chain so exciting. Since that first visit, Cava has become one of my go-to chain restaurants. It has been especially helpful on busy days when I need something filling or while traveling to a new city. Instead of spending time researching restaurants and reviewing menus, I know I can count on Cava as a familiar option.
Environment
I visited Cava for the first time in January 2021, when pandemic-related restrictions were still in place. Because of that I opted for takeout, but I did go inside to order and observe their processes.
The space itself had a modern, minimalistic design with a clean and inviting feel. There were a few tables inside and some outdoor seating available. Although I originally thought Cava would be a great place to meet friends for a casual meal, it has become a go-to takeout spot over the years.
Food
One of the biggest highlights of Cava is its build-your-own bowl format, similar to other fast-casual chains. You start with a base, then add proteins, toppings, and sauces, making it easy to customize a gluten-free meal.
Before visiting, I recommend reviewing the menu online. It makes it easier to identify gluten-free options and plan a safe order. During my visit, I also paid close attention to how food was prepared. In my experience, Cava had several procedures in place to help reduce cross-contact. Each ingredient had its own designated utensil, and the open kitchen allowed me to watch my meal being assembled.
When I mentioned that I was gluten-free and declined pita, staff were understanding. Over multiple visits since then, I’ve consistently had positive experiences. Team members have been willing to change gloves and take extra precautions when preparing my meal. Those small steps make a big difference in helping me feel safe eating out.
For my first order, I built a grains and greens bowl with roasted eggplant, hummus, and tzatziki. I chose the harissa honey chicken for protein, which had more of a kick than I expected (thanks to ingredients like cayenne). I finished it off with fire-roasted corn, feta cheese, and avocado.
The bowl traveled well for takeout, which isn’t always the case with fast-casual food. When I got home and finally dug in, I loved the combination of flavors, fresh, filling, and just the right amount of spice.
One thing to note: the falafel is not gluten-free, which was a bit disappointing since it’s a Mediterranean staple. However, there are still plenty of other protein options to choose from.

Final Thoughts on Gluten Free at Cava
Since my first visit, Cava has become a reliable and trusted option for me when I’m looking for a quick, gluten-free meal. The chain has expanded significantly, making it more accessible in many areas, and I’ve continued to have consistently positive experiences.
Cava stands out as a strong fast-casual option for the gluten-free diner. The customizable menu, transparent food preparation, and staff’s willingness to accommodate gluten-free needs all contribute to that.
As always, experiences can vary by location. However, based on my visits, Cava is a restaurant I feel comfortable returning to. It’s also one I often recommend for a quick, flavorful gluten-free meal.
