If you’ve never explored Indian cuisine, I highly encourage you to give it a try. Growing up, I was a pretty picky eater and mostly stuck to familiar foods. One of the unexpected benefits of living gluten-free has been becoming much more adventurous with food. Trying new cuisines has introduced me to incredible flavors that I never would have experienced otherwise.
One restaurant that helped me branch out was Tarka Indian Kitchen. Tarka first opened in Austin, but has expanded throughout the state of Texas. Tarka is now serving fresh, flavorful Indian food in many major Texas cities.
If you’re looking for gluten-free Indian food in Texas, Tarka is a restaurant I’d highly recommend.
Environment
I visited the Tarka location in Sunset Valley several times when I lived in Austin. I had positive experiences with both dining in and take out.
Tarka is a counter-service restaurant. You order at the counter before taking a seat. Online ordering is also available for takeout.
The dining room has a relaxed atmosphere with plenty of seating, and an outdoor patio for nicer weather. The decor is clean and modern without feeling overly busy, making it a comfortable place to enjoy a meal.
The staff have always been friendly and willing to answer questions about the menu, which is something I especially appreciate when dining gluten-free.

Food

This is where Tarka really shines.
One of my favorite things about the restaurant is that many menu items are clearly labeled gluten-free, this makes it much easier to order with confidence. They also identify vegetarian and vegan options, which is helpful for anyone with multiple dietary preferences or restrictions. During my time in Texas, I was living with family, so we often dined at Tarka together. Tarka made it easy for everyone to find something they enjoyed, thanks to its variety of menu options, including a kids’ menu for younger diners.
While many traditional Indian dishes are naturally gluten-free, not every Indian restaurant handles gluten the same way. Cross-contact, sauces, and breads can all vary between restaurants. As always I recommend letting the staff know you have Celiac Disease or require a strict gluten-free diet before ordering
We always started with the Chicken Pakoras, which were labeled gluten-free on the menu. Since fried foods can sometimes present a cross-contact concern, I would still recommend confirming the restaurant’s current preparation practices. These were consistently my favorite menu item. If you’ve never had chicken pakoras before, they reminded me a bit of chicken fries, but with a much more flavorful, well-seasoned coating. They weren’t spicy, just packed with warm, savory spices that made them incredibly satisfying. They were served with a delicious dipping sauce that paired perfectly with the crispy chicken. I am dreaming about the day I get to enjoy these again.
For my entree, I ordered the Channa Masala, a hearty chickpea curry that is both gluten-free and vegan. It was packed with flavor, incredibly satisfying, and generously portioned. I could often get two meals out of this dish, which is always a bonus.
Whether you’re new to Indian food or already love the cuisine, there are plenty of gluten-free dishes on the menu worth trying.

Final Thoughts on Gluten Free Tarka
If you’re searching for gluten-free Indian food in Texas, Tarka is one of my favorite recommendations.
The clearly labeled menu, friendly staff, generous portions, and flavorful food make it an excellent option for anyone following a gluten-free diet.
Another aspect I appreciate about Tarka is the company’s commitment to sustainability. The City of Austin has even recognized Tarka for its environmentally friendly practices. It is a place that values both great food and responsible operations.
Overall, Tarka was one of my go-to restaurants when I lived in Austin. I would gladly recommend it to anyone looking for gluten-free Indian cuisine.
